From a peak of over 1,600 pupils, the school's current roll is around 450. Its feeders are Central, Dalneigh, Bishop Eden's, St Joseph's and Merkinch Primary Schools. It is situated west of the river and west of Kenneth Street (A82).

In 2005, it became one of the first twenty eight schools in Scotland to be awarded Schools of Ambition status.[1]

The current headmaster at Inverness High School is Ritchie Cunningham. His two deputes are, Ms English and Mrs Taylor.

History

After occupying various sites around the city, it moved to its current location, in Dalneigh, in 1937. At that time, it was renamed the Technical High School and specialised in providing vocational courses. It kept this name until 1959 when it adopted its current name.

On 8 October 2008, a 27-year-old caretaker, with a 'fascination for fires' and the emergency services, set fire to the school hall, causing £350,000 worth of damage. On 7 July 2009 he was jailed for two years at Inverness Sheriff Court.[2]

Earlier in the year on 3 June 2008, Prince Charles (Duke of Rothesay) and his wife (Duchess of Rothesay) had visited the school to visit a Real Food project. Another visit to Inverness Sheriff Court was necessary on 18 August 2011 when the 29-year-old manager of the Real Food Company was found to have stashed money (around £2,000) from the school.[3]

REAL project

REAL is an abbreviation for Real Education Action Lives, and is an attempt to prepare pupils for the working world. Funding came from Children in Need. It is a Community Interest Company. A division of the company was Real Organics, which became REAL Food. Prince Charles takes a lot of interest in organic food. John Swinney the SNP MSP visited the school soon after Prince Charles.
